Prep for both Reading Comprehension and SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar).
SATs prep doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Our weekly English SATS group classes are designed to help your child master the key skills that they need for SATs in a relaxed, supportive environment.
Over the course of our sessions, we’ll cover everything from complex sentences and relative clauses to the active and passive voice, teaching your child how to confidently handle any tricky grammar questions they’ll face in the exam. Each lesson is focused, fun, and aimed at building your child’s confidence, so they’re fully prepared for the big day.
In these sessions, your child will not only learn how to tackle SATs questions - they’ll gain skills and confidence that they can apply to every subject.
So what do we cover?
Spelling, punctuation and grammar
Compound Sentences: Sentences with two main clauses joined by conjunctions like "and," "but," or "so."
Complex Sentences: Sentences with a main clause and one or more subordinate clauses.
Noun Phrases: Groups of words that include a noun and add description (e.g., "the bright, sunny day").
Fronted Adverbials: Words or phrases at the start of a sentence describing time, place, or manner (e.g., "Before sunrise, we went for a walk.").
Word Classes: Categories like nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs that explain a word's role in a sentence.
Parenthesis: Extra information added using brackets, commas, or dashes (e.g., "The dog (who was very old) barked.").
Tenses: Past, present, and future forms showing when an action happens (e.g., "She plays," "She played," "She will play").
Active and Passive Voice: Active focuses on the subject doing the action ("The cat chased the mouse"); passive focuses on the action ("The mouse was chased by the cat").
Year 6 Spellings: Mastering challenging words like necessary, accommodate, and pronunciation.
Punctuation: Using commas, full stops, question marks, and more to clarify meaning.
Apostrophe for Possession: Showing ownership (e.g., "Sarah’s book").
Synonyms and Antonyms: Words with similar meanings (synonyms) or opposite meanings (antonyms).
Prefixes and Suffixes: Parts added to words to change their meaning (e.g., "unhappy" or "happiness").
Apostrophes for Contraction: Combining words and showing missing letters (e.g., "don’t" for "do not").
Speech: Writing dialogue correctly using quotation marks.
Colons and Semi-Colons: Colons introduce lists or explanations; semi-colons link related clauses.
Reading
Summarising: Briefly explaining the main points of a text.
Prediction: Guessing what might happen next in the text based on clues.
Inference: Reading between the lines to understand what’s implied but not directly stated.
Retrieval: Finding specific facts or details directly from the text.
Vocabulary-Based Questions: Understanding the meaning of words in context.
3-Mark Questions & Using Evidence: Giving detailed answers supported by quotes or examples from the text.
